The Reunification of Germany was officially ratified on the 3rd October 1990, a year after the fall of the Berlin Wall that divided Germany and the whole Europe in two. The territories of the German Democratic Republic, known as “East Germany”, formed as many Federal States and joined formally the Federal Republic of Germany. San Marino celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Reunification of Germany with a 2€ commemorative coin designed by Erik Spiekermann, German designer of international renown, designer of typographical characters, Professor at the University of Arts in Bremen. The coin depicts two representations of the Brandenburg Gate that cross like two hands, symbol of the reunification of the two peoples. In fact it was the first place where people from both sides of the wall met after wall’s demolition. The Gate was ended in 1791 and during the cold war was in East Berlin. Today it is the most famous Berlin monument.
