The coin depicts the Three Graces, celebrated work by Canova, kept at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. The reference for the European figurative culture has always been ancient Greece. The theme of the Graces is a very ancient subject as “Aglalia, Eufrosine, Talia” were Greek divinities (protectresses of artists); for Neoclassical culture, the “Graces” were to be called “Pleasure According to Reason” commissioned by Giuseppina Bonaparte to Canova, who had already been chosen as the official sculptor of the Bonaparte family. It was produced between 1812 and 1816. On the back of the coin, the Three Graces are shown in head and shoulders, framed by a line that is open at the top. The face of the coin shows the Three Towers of San Marino stylized with branches of oak and olive to enclose the composition.
